Hilliard (George S.) House is built.

1835

[1850-MLS] Architect: Gridley Bryant. It is located at 62 Pinckney Street. It becomes the home of George Hillard from the early 1840s to the 1870s. Despite Hilliard’s position as a federal commissioner charged with issuing warrants to fugitive slave catchers, the house subsequently becomes a stop on the Underground Railroad, thanks to his wife. Ellen Craft is among the fugitive slaves who are sheltered in a hidden chamber in the attic.
